Alois Nebel
by Tomas Lunak

The end of the 80’s in the 20th century. The stories of the past and the present converge at a small railway in Bíly Potok, a tiny village on the Czech-Polish border. It’s the home of Alois Nebel, the local dispatcher, a loner who prefers old timetables to people. Alois enjoys the tranquil loneliness of the station, that is until the fog rolls in. Then he begins to suffer from hallucinations, seeing trains from the last hundred years passing through the station. They bring ghosts and shadows from the dark past of Central Europe - a Nazi occupation, the transportation of Jews, the Communists’ revenge on the Germans. These nightmares ultimately send Alois on a journey that includes stopovers at a sanatorium; losing his job to a ‘friend’ named Wachek; meeting an ominous man named The Mute who seeks revenge on Wachek’s father, an old Communist; seeing Prague’s Central Station; and falling in love with the restroom attendant Kveta. Upon Alois’ return to Bíly Potok, these destinies cross again and Alois must judge them for himself if he and Kveta are to survive the storm they stir up …
