On the Oaxacan coast, Marisol dreams of joining a Self-Defense Group or Community Guards and living in freedom. In reality, she ends up as a survivor of the battle between Mauro and Mundo, the two men who seek to control her destiny. Kokoloko is the story of a tragic love in the context of a small coastal community in contemporary Mexico.
Gerardo Naranjo (Guanajuato, 1971)
Master in Direction from the American Film Institute in Los Angeles, California. Founder of the ‘Cero en conducta’ Collective. He made his first short film Perro negro (Black Dog) in 1997. He was a co-writer and star of the movie The GoodTimesKid (Azazel Jacobs, 2005). Subsequently, he made Drama / mex (2006), premiered at the Critics' Week in Cannes Film Festival in May 2006 (Semaine de la critique du Festival de Cannes), and Voy a Explotar (I’m Going to Explode) (2008), premiered at the 65th Biennial Venice Film Festival (65th Mostra Internazionale d'Arte Cinematografica) in the ‘Orizzonti’ Section. The film was selected, in turn, for the Toronto, New York and Berlinale 2009 festivals. It was deserving of the FIPRESCI award at the Thessaloniki International Film Festival in Greece. In 2010,He wrote shot and directed R-100, a short film that is part of Revolution (2010), a compilation of 10 short films directed by 10 Mexican filmmakers. In 2011 he released his acclaimed film Miss Bala, presented in the ‘Un certain regard’ section of the Cannes Film Festival and received critical acclaim at the ‘Latin Horizons’ section of the San Sebastián International Film Festival receiving a espcial mention. Miss Bala was nominated for the Goya Awards and for the Oscars in 2012. In 2019 a remake is produced by Columbia Pictures and directed by Catherine Hardwicke. In recent years, he has worked on several American TV series such as The Bridge, Fear the Walking Dead, and Narcos.
