World sales company The Match Factory is dedicated to bringing the finest in arthouse cinema to the international market. Since our founding in 2006, our passion has been to work with films of signature and vision from around the globe. The Match Factory has built strong relationships with acclaimed directors and producers, while working simultaneously to discover promising new filmmakers with a powerful original style.
Founded by Michael Weber, Pandora Film's Reinhard Brundig and Karl Baumgartner The Match Factory's films have received numerous awards from the most prestigious film festivals: Jasmila Zbanic's GRBAVICA (Golden Bear, Berlinale 2006); Bahman Ghobadi (San Sebastian 2006) received his second Golden Shell Award; Fatih Akin's THE EDGE OF HEAVEN (Prix Du Scenario, Cannes 2007); and Ari Folman's WALTZ WITH BASHIR won the Golden Globe® for Best Foreign Language Film and was nominated fort he Academy Award® Best Foreign Language Film in 2009.
In 2009, The Match Factory showcased highly anticipated titles: THE DUST OF TIME (Theo Angelopoulos), SOUL KITCHEN (Fatih Akin), ON THE PATH (Jasmila Zbanic) and DESERT FLOWER (Sherry Horman) based on the world-bestselling novel. In 2010, AJAMI by Scandar Copti and Yaron Shani and THE MILK OF SORROW by Claudia Llosa were nominated for the Academy Best Foreign Language Film®, BAL - HONEY by Semih Kaplanoglu won the Golden Bear at the Berlinale and Apichatpong Wheerasethakul's UNCLE BOONMEE WHO CAN RECALL HIS PAST LIVES won the Palm d'Or at Cannes.
In 2011, SLEEPING SICKNESS by Ulrich Köhler won the Silver Bear for Best Director and IF NOT US, WHO by Andres Veiel the Prize of the Guild of German Art at the Berlinale. Milagros Mumenthaler's BACK TO STAY received the Pardo d'oro, and the Pardo d'oro for Best Actress for Maria Canale at Locarno. The Match Factory also premiered films by Aki Kaurismäki (LE HAVRE - Official Competition Festival de Cannes), Miranda July (THE FUTURE - Official Selection Berlinale 2011), Amir Naderi (CUT - Opening Film Orizzonti Venice Film Festival 2011), Yorgos Lanthimos (ALPS - Official Competition Venice Film Festival 2011) and many others.
2012 saw two Silver Bears at Berlinale: Christian Petzold's BARBARA (Best Director) and Bence Fliegauf's JUST THE WIND (Grand Jury Silver Bear) and the Alfred Bauer Prize for Miguel Gome's TABU. At Cannes International Film Festival The Match Factory represented IN THE FOG by Sergei Loznitsa in Competition, Apichatpong Wheerasethakul's new film MEKONG HOTEL, as well as Fatih Akin's documentary feature POLLUTING PARADISE. FILL THE VOID by Rama Burshtein won the Coppa Volpi for Best Acress in Venice, and the first Saudi Arabian feature film WADJDA by Haifaa Al Mansour received great attention since its premiere in Venice Orizzonti Competition. Further world premieres, such as Margarethe von Trotta's HANNAH ARENDT or Sally Potter's GINGER AND ROSA rounded up The Match Factory's slate that year.
In 2013, The Match Factory had four films in Berlinale Competition, of which AN EPISODE IN THE LIFE OF AN IRON PICKER by Danis Tanović won two Silver Bears (Best Actor and Grand Jury Silver Bear) and PRINCE AVALANCHE by David Gordon Green won the Silver Bear for Best Direction. The Panorama title THE BROKEN CIRCLE BREAKDOWN by Felix van Groeningen turned out to be one of the most loved films by critics and audiences in 2013, with numerous Awards like the Panorama Audience Award or the Europa Cinema's Label. In Cannes The Match Factory had OMAR by Hany Abu-Assad, THE LUNCHBOX by Ritesh Batra, THE OWNERS by Agustín Toscano and Ezequiel Radusky, and opened the Directors' Fortnight with THE CONGRESS by Ari Folman. More much anticipated world premieres were presented at the autumn festivals, among them VIJAY AND I by Sam Garbarski and WETLANDS by David Wnendt in Locarno, or in Venice Competition NIGHT MOVES by Kelly Reichardt and THE POLICE OFFICER'S WIFE by Philip Gröning, which won the Special Jury Prize, and Götz Spielmann's new film OCTOBER NOVEMBER in San Sebastián, to mention only a few.
In 2014 Felix van Groeningen's THE BORKEN CIRCLE BREAKDOWN and Hany Abu-Assad's OMAR where officially nominated for the Academy Best Foreign Language Film®.
In this year's Cannes edition WHITE GOD by Kornél Mundruczó won the Prize of Un Certain Regard and LE MERAVIGLIE by Alice Rohrwacher received the Grand Prix du Jury.
Alex Ross Perry´s LISTEN UP PHILIP won the Special Jury Prize in Locarno. Further world premieres presented at the festival were Jasmila Žbanić´s LOVE ISLAND and DANCING ARABS by Eran Riklis.
Fatih Akin´s THE CUT opened as competitor in Venice, where the company also had ALTMAN directed by Ron Mann, BYPASS by Duane Hopkins and Sabina Guzzanti´s THE STATE-MAFIA PACT.
Christian Petzold´s PHOENIX was warmly welcomed in Toronto along with ITSI BITSI by Ole Christian Madsen and TIGERS by Danis Tanović.
In 2015 The Match Factory had four titles in Berlinale Competition, two of which were awarded with Silver Bears: 45 YEARS by Andrew Haigh (Silver Bears for Best Actor and Best Actress), Sebastian Schipper´s VICTORIA (Silver Bear for Outstanding Artistic Contribution), Andreas Dresen´s AS WE WERE DREAMING and SWORN VIRGIN by Laura Bispuri. Anna Muylaert´s Sundance Award winner THE SECOND MOTHER won the Panorama Audience Award.
Besides our slate of current films, we are proud to represent classics of the X-Filme library, the entire library of Aki Kaurismäki, as well as selected titles of Jim Jarmusch (NIGHT ON EARTH, PERMANENT VACATION, DEAD MAN, DOWN BY LAW, STRANGER THAN PARADISE and MYSTERY TRAIN)
